The Empyrean is a minimalist lighting collection by the Munich-based atelier, KAIA designed in collaboration with The Guild of Saint Luke. With two distinct and compelling pieces — the eponymous “Empyrean” chandelier and the “Trap” sconce — the collection is an interpretation of lighting’s evocative and spiritual essence and embodies KAIA and The Guild of Saint Luke’s (also known as GSL Works,) shared commitment to pioneering craftsmanship and design.
In designing Empyrean, KAIA and John Whelan, founder and designer of GSL Works, drew inspiration from the Art Deco period’s sleek geometric designs and the mysticism of sacred geometry to create a duo of imaginative futuristic lights. The highlight of the collection is the “Empyrean”, a modern, limited-edition stainless steel chandelier that is adorned with a subtle “starburst” motif, reminiscent of esoteric rays of light that invoke feelings of transcendence and the sublime when viewed from above. Complimenting this piece is the “Trap”, a perforated, polished steel sconce that exudes a soft, warm glow.
The collection debuted at this year’s Milan Design Week, marking KAIA’s inaugural appearance at the Italian design event. Showcased in Milan’s bustling 5Vie district, the Empyrean collection’s installation presented the two lights in an enigmatic atmosphere, shrouded in a deep black palette that evokes a sense of darkness and intrigue. Playing with contrasts, the installation also featured the pieces alongside KAIA’s classic lighting designs, the “EON” and “LIA”, as well as the atelier’s minimalist furniture pieces including the limited-edition “Hearg” table and “Seld” chairs.
